Kitten Care

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are given to your kitten at a young age to enable their immune system to recognise and help fight particular life threatening diseases if they so encounter these in the environment.

The diseases we vaccinate for are Panleukopaenia, Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus. FIV is Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).
Your kitten will need to receive a series of three vaccinations at the ages of: * 6-8 weeks * 10-12 weeks *14-16 weeks

Heartworm

Heartworm is transferred by mosquitoes. Once your kitten is infected the adult heartworm lives in the heart and pulmonary arteries. This infestation will grow and contribute to the weakening of their heart and ultimately can be fatal. Prevention is imperative!
If living in a high mosquito area we recommend a product called Revolution which will protect your kitten from heartworm and some intestinal worms in a monthly spot on treatment.

Intestinal Worming

The intestinal worms your kitten can contract are Tapeworm, Hookworm and Roundworm. These intestinal worms are easily contractible from the environment and can also pass onto our family. It is important to have strict hygiene practices and worming regimes to prevent infestations. We recommend that you use a top spot like Revolution combined with a small tapeworm tablet to be given:

  • Every 2 weeks up until 12 weeks of age
  • Then every 1 month up to 6 months of age
  • Then quarterly for life (use the change of seasons as a reminder)

Nutrition

We know how important a well balanced and nutritious diet is for our health and it is equally important for your kittens growth and development as well.

Hill's Science Diet Kitten food provides precisely balanced nutrition to build immunity and enhance mobility as your kitten grows. It contains high quality ingredients that provide an ideal combination of nutrients, clinically proven antioxidants and vital fatty acids to give your kitten the best start in life.

Flea

It is important that you have your kitten on a veterinary recommended flea treatment product that not only kills on contact but also treats the environment and stops the life cycle of fleas. We recommend Revolution used monthly for flea control. You can use this product from as early as 8 weeks of age.

Paralysis Tick

Paralysis ticks are blood sucking parasites that attach to your kitten and burrow into the skin. Ticks suck the blood and inject a neurotoxin which causes paralysis in your cat. This paralysis can be fatal!!! Preventative measures are imperative and is most important in the months from August to January.
In this period we recommend:

Frontline Plus spray applied every three weeks is the only product for tick prevention in cats

  • Daily checking with your fingers over your kittens coat
  • Clipping their coat short for easy checking if they have a long coat.

Grooming

Grooming your pet should start from an early age. This will help to get them used to being brushed, clipping their nails and checking and cleaning their ears. When brushing your kitten it is important to make it as enjoyable as possible with lots of treats. Start with just short periods of brushing and work up to longer periods. We recommend only trimming your kitten’s nails if they are 100% indoor cats.

Dental Care

Your kitten will be teething and looking for things to chew. It is important that they learn to chew on raw bones to help clean their teeth and gums. Introducing bones at an early age is recommended. It is important to choose bones that are big enough that you kitten can’t swallow whole. Chicken necks and wings are always a good option. Never leave your kitten unattended with a bone and ensure they are chewing the bone. Discard any old bones after the first hour.

Puppy Care

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are given to your puppy at a young age to enabletheir immune system to recognise and help fight particular life threatening diseases. The diseases we vaccinate for are Parvovirus, Hepatitis, Distemper, Bordatella and Parainfluenza.
Your puppy will receive a thorough heath check at each vaccination and will need to receive a series of 3 vaccinations at the ages of:

  • 6-8 weeks
  • 10-12 weeks
  • 14-16 weeks

Heartworm

Heartworm is transferred by mosquitoes. Once your dog is infected the adult heartworm lives in the heart and pulmonary arteries. This infestation will grow and contribute to the weakening of their heart and ultimately can be fatal. Prevention is imperative!
We recommend puppies to be treated monthly until 6 months of age with a product called Interceptor. At 6 months we then switch your pups heartworm protection to an annual Proheart injection which saves you having to remember to give your pup a tablet every month.

Intestinal Worming

Intestinal worms your dog can contract are Tapeworm, Whipworm, Hookworm and Roundworm. These intestinal worms are easily contractible from the environment and may in some circumstances also pass onto our family. It is important to have strict hygiene practices and worming regimes to prevent infestations.
For pups we recommend a combination of Interceptor and Drontal at a schedule decided on by veterinarian up until the age of 6 months. From then on your adult dog will need a Drontal tablet quarterly for life (use the change of season as a reminder).

Nutrition

We know how important a well balanced and nutritious diet is for our health and it is the same for our puppy’s growth and ongoing health as well. We recommend a combination of Hills Science Diet dry food and BARF raw food for your puppy. They are both complete foods and contain high quality ingredients that provide an ideal combination of nutrients, clinically proven antioxidants and vital fatty acids to give your puppy the best start in life.

Flea

It is important that you have your puppy on a veterinary recommended flea treatment product that not only kills on contact but also treats the environment and stops the life cycle of fleas.
The flea product we recommend will vary depending on a number of factors such as frequency of bathing, wether the pup swims or not and whether there is young children in the house. Our veterinarians will advise which product is the best for you most commonly out of Advantage, Frontline Plus and Comfortis.

Paralysis Tick

Paralysis ticks are blood sucking parasites that attach to your pup and burrow into the skin. Ticks suck the blood and inject a neurotoxin which causes paralysis in your dog. This paralysis can be fatal!!! Preventative measures are imperative and is most important in the months from August to January. During this period we recommend:

Frontline Plus applied fortnightly for tick prevention
Daily checking with your hands over your pups coat
Clipping their coat short for easy checking.

Grooming

Grooming your pet should start from an early age to get them used to having a bath, clipping their nails and checking and cleaning their ears. When bathing your pup it is important to use a veterinary based shampoo as they have the correct Ph level for your pets skin. We recommend Allergroom shampoo or Episoothe oatmeal shampoo for your pups skin.

Dental Care

Your puppy will be teething and looking for things to chew. It is important when they are older to chew on raw bones to help clean their teeth and gums’ so introducing this at an early age is recommended. It is important to choose whole bones that are big enough that you pup can’t swallow the bone. The bone should be meaty. Never leave your pup unattended with a bone or and ensure they are chewing the bone. Discard any old bones that have been left for over 1 hour.
